About

This tumblog is my solution to the burgeoning file of quotations I have been collecting for the past few years.  I have been keeping them heretofore in a Word document on my hard drive, but this has posed a few problems; chiefly, the inconvenience of searching for a specific quote if I cannot remember the source or author offhand.  I briefly toyed with the idea of writing my own PHP database, with the help of a friend of mine who knows PHP; but ultimately, I felt the time and energy required to learn a programming language could be better spent in other ways.

I finally hit on the idea of using Tumblr to manage the collection, using the tag and search features to solve the problem of locating specific quotations.  I’ve been using Tumblr for a couple years now.  My other tumblogs are intracoastal wanderings, my personal blog; The Way North, a blog about medieval Norway which I use as a visual reference and inspiration for writing my third novel; The Holy City, a celebration of the place I live — Charleston, South Carolina, the greatest city in America; The Stone of the Hapless, a blog about Tolkien and his works; and Eth and Thorn, my non-themed image blog.

The title of this tumblog was taken from a book by Peter Gilliver, Jeremy Marshall, and Edmund Weiner, called The Ring of Words: Tolkien and the Oxford English Dictionary.

Submissions are welcomed and appreciated, but as this is my personal quotation collection, I of course reserve the right to reject them.  Though this tumblog is mostly for my own personal use, I hope others can get some enjoyment and use out of it as well!
